The first Sports Cars are considered to be (though the term would not be coined until after World War One) the 3 litre made in 1910 Vauxhall 20 hp (15 kW) and 27/80PS Austro-Daimler (designed by Ferdinand Porsche).

The world debut of the Acura RLX Concept was held yesterday at the New York Auto Show.

Acura’s RLX will be the company’s new flagship sedan and this concept is a first look at the design and engineering direction for it. Expect the RLX to be visually very close to it.

The RLX Concept employs an extraordinary array of new Acura technologies, including the Sport Hybrid SH-AWD.

The RLX Concept’s all-new 3.5L direct-injected VTEC V6 engine and Sport Hybrid SH-AWD system combine to generate more than 370-horsepower, and are paired to a 7-speed dual clutch transmission (DCT). This powertrain will be slotted in a new lightweight body and will deliver, according to Acura, “V8 acceleration with class-leading four-cylinder fuel economy.”

Acura estimates the EPA rating to be at 30 mpg, for both city and highway.

Acura revealed that the production RLX will also be offered in a 310-horsepower, front-wheel-drive version.

The performance hybrid system identified by the Hybrid SH-AWD designation utilizes a unique dual electric motor drive unit with a bilateral torque adjustable control system to instantly generate negative or positive torque to the rear wheels during cornering.

Both this RLX concept and the ILX presented earlier show Acura is slowly reducing the visual weight of its “shield”, now incorporating it into the grille rather than using it as a grille.

The RLX Concept achieves an ultra-rigid and light body design through substantial use of high-strength steel and aluminum. Acura still expects the front wheel drive version to weigh in just under 4,000 pounds.

Just like any luxury car offered today, the RLX will offer a complete suite of telematics. Acura’s Collision Mitigation Braking System and the first application of Acura's Lane Keep Assist System will be offered. In addition, Forward Collision Warning and Lane Departure Warning will be offered as standard equipment on the RLX.
