After receiving full approval from the Chinese government to sell the electric hatch, Nissan is reportedly readying its Leaf for export there by mid-October according to Kimiyasu Nakamura, president of Nissan's China joint venture.
Initial reports indicate the Leaf will will be priced around 200,000 yuan ($31,268 U.S. at the current exchange rate) in China, which we'd assume includes China's $8,800 electric vehicle subsidy. For comparison, Baojun 630, a compact four-door sedan powered by a 1.5-liter gas engine, is offered at a starting price of 62,800 yuan ($9,818 U.S.) in China.
According to Nakamura, "The Leaf does not hit the Chinese market's sweet spot now, in terms of price, but that will change as unit sales grow." Additionally, Nissan reportedly sees manufacturing the Leaf in China as a long-term goal that could significantly reduce the electric hatchback's sticker price.
