May sales of Nissan’s all-electric Leaf saw it finishing with 2,138 units sold, a 319.2-percent year-over-year increase and making this its second-best sales month since its December 2010 launch.
This follows the same result achieved the month prior, and April’s 1,937 units sold was only briefly the Leaf’s second-best sales month, but Nissan is on a roll. These results in turn follow the Leaf’s all-time record sales month in March – 2,236 sold – which resulted when the revised 2013 was launched from its new point of assembly in Smyrna, Tenn.
“Since launching the U.S.-assembled 2013 Leaf with a broader range of trims and reduced price, we’ve seen increasing interest and consistent performance for our electric vehicle,” said Nissan’s Erik Gottfried, Nissan’s director of Electric Vehicle Marketing and Sales Strategy. “With more than 27,000 on the road in the U.S., we are moving beyond the early adopters as people get more educated about how an EV can meet their daily driving needs in an affordable and fun package. LEAF traditionally has sold great on the West Coast, and now we’re seeing places like Atlanta, Chicago and Denver become hot markets as well.”
Since March, Nissan has sold 6,311 Leaf vehicles which is a 332.5-percent jump over the same period in 2012.
The case for the Leaf still has many people sitting on the sidelines, but it is stronger this year. Those willing to crunch the numbers with help from subsidies, and able to work within the car’s limitations are finding the benefits can outweigh the drawbacks.
We will have a full review of the 2013 Leaf posted in a day or two.
